Ossie,

Do you agree with this coaches suggestion to make the follow through "horizontal":

Thanks for the question Wes, although the sound on my computer is not working so I have no idea what the coach was actually saying.

However the basic answer to your question is Yes. For an attacking forehand return of serve (or for any attacking forehand hit from inside the baseline for that matter) the swing pattern of the follow-through should be close to horizontal.
I do not like any follow through that goes over the shoulder as it does not promote shoulder turn or foreram pronation. There are however some excaptions for elite players.
I much prefer that the racquet head finishes close to the left elbow or even the left hip rather than over the left shoulder.
A good shoulder turn, forearm pronation and the racquet head finishing between the left elbow and left hip promotes a powerful forehand with plenty of topspin.

HEY Ossie, i find that when I do what you suggested, the balls I hit have more of a "compact" spin to it. Seems less loopy. Is that a good thing?

It certainly is if you are able to control the shot still

i havent read the T&C of this website, but there must be something wrong with the above post... For NFL at a Aust tennis forum...

Anyway, back OT, I thought it was relevant to note something I heard in the commentary at FYB (fuzzyyellowball) during the match between Fed and Murray.

They said that the reason why Fed's shot has so much top spin (depending on his shot selection and position) is primarily because of his pronation rather than the low to high motion. They use the analogy of turning a door knob when he hits his forehand
